art/brain book

I'll be out of town until late 5/19, and will not have computer access. My Book Buddy brought me a book which I opened last night, and was surprised at its contents, even tho' I know I've seen the earlier edition: Drawing on the right side of the brain; a course in enhancing creativity and artistic confidence, rev. ed., by Betty Edwards (c1989). "Applying discoveries in brain research to the teaching of drawing skills, (she) presents a set of basic exercised designed to release creative potential and tap into the the special abilities of the visual, perceptual right hemisphere of the brain ....". The exercises progressively develop 5 perceptual skills: percep-
tion of edges, of spaces, of relationships, of lights and shadows, and of the whole, or gestalt. I haven't read much yet, but this looks like really good brain exercise. (Her work is based on the discoveries of psychobiologist Roger Sperry, who received the Nobel Prize in 1981.)
